Spring designs are not all the same and different situations require different spring solutions. 60 plus years of experience have given us the unique position to solve spring application issues for our customers. Over the years we have seen more designs and unique applications than most design engineers will see in a lifetime.
A few years back one of Titan’s customers was experiencing a high failure rate with his springs and asked us to help. When Titans engineering staff viewed the way the customer was using the spring the problem was obvious.They were using the wrong type of spring in their high speed fruit labeling machine.
The machine looked like an old movie projector with a reel on top containing labels on tape. Another reel on the bottom coiled the tape as the machine removed the labels sticking them onto the fruit. A torsion spring as pictured below was being used with the small arm anchored to the machine body. The large arm with the loop instead of rotating toward the coils the way torsion springs work it was moving away. The large arm controlled the device sticking the labels to the fruit. Because of the poor spring application it was traveling so far it was over stressing the spring causing spring failure. This resulted in unlabeled fruit and a irritated customer.
Titans engineers suggested using an extension spring which is better suited for the application.
One end was still anchored to the body of the machine. The other end traveled with the moving part of the machine on a vertical plane in a very low stress application.
Spring Problem Solved
Substituting the extension for the torsion spring extended the working life of the spring virtually eliminating the failures. The customer was ecstatic with the solution but the down side for Titan was he never ordered any more replacement springs.
Our custom component manufacturing is something Titan Spring been known for since our beginning in 1957. It is part of our problem solving service where we work with engineers or entrepreneurs and many times inventors to find solutions to their needs.
The Beryllium Copper clip pictured below was made by Titan to be used in a satellite system. It has a spring function which is accomplished with the three tabs that are pushed in just shy of the back wall of the part. The clip is mounted in an electrical system so it will hold the circuit boards in place. Multiple clips are used to hold the boards in place.
Satellites differ depending on the manufacturer and the mission they are designed for so clips like this one are manufactured in small quantities well under 100 pieces. The clips have stringent performance requirements that must be met prior to launch because they cannot be replaced in space.
Titan also has been called upon to manufacture custom components for satellite antennae systems. The systems are tucked away during the launch and must be deployed once the satellite reaches orbit. Failure to deploy will negatively affect communication with the satellite or possibly eliminate it all together. A multi million dollar satellite could be useless space junk if everything does not perform as designed.
Compression springs are used to move the antennae out of its storage place. Then custom component manufacturing parts of special steel open the antennae so it can be moved to transmit or receive information from earth.
We are referencing just two examples of our custom component manufacturing capabilities and we are capable of precision machined parts in addition to assemblies. Wire forming, metal stamping and various spring types are also available from Titan Spring an AS9100 Rev. “D” Certified.
Spring problems are just part of the business and why spring companies exist to is solve them. In this case the spring problem was not the design. It was how to replace a broken part over half a century out of production. The pictures on this page were taken of a hot rod in Coeur D Alene Idaho at the Car D Alene hot rod show held every year Fathers Day weekend. We make springs like the ones on the car but have no way of know if we made these particular springs.
Spring problem #1 is to figure out what material to use which is most likely music wire because of its mechanical properties. Spring problem #2 is what technique to use in making the spring. This complex assembly of leather straps, springs, rivets, and a buckle assembly would eventually be replaced by just one simple extension spring.
The hold down spring was reverse engineered from a customer sample. The spring requires many hand winding operations because the coils on one side are left hand wound and the other right hand.
This spring is for a non military application but, we do the same thing for aircraft spares requirements. Titans vast experiences over 60 plus years in the spring industry combined with our extensive military and defense experience put the company in a great place to solve problems. Obsolete or hard to find products can be duplicated from samples or re engineered for an even better performing product.
Growing up in the heart for the industry in the last half of the 20th century positioned Titan to play a key role in many of the programs of that era. We have touched some of the end products, seen them fly, and in some cases flown in them.
The Boeing Company awarded its silver level Preferred Supplier Certification to Titan Spring, Inc. of Hayden, Idaho.
Boeing congratulated Titan on achieving superior supplier performance.
Titan maintained a minimum Silver composite performance rating for each month of the performance period from October 1, 2012 to September 30,2013. Silver is the second highest level in the Boeing Preferred Supplier Certification process, a tool to identify and recognize high-performing suppliers strategically important to Boeing.
Boeing has established three levels of certification — bronze, silver and gold — with gold being the highest. To achieve preferred supplier status, suppliers are evaluated against specific performance standards in three categories: statistical process control, business processes and performance. Suppliers who meet or exceed the standards in these categories are identified and recognized as preferred suppliers.
Titan Spring, Inc. is a AS9100 Revision “D” Certified Company and is ITAR Registered with the United States Department of State Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.
Titan is proud to be selected for this achievement that we worked very hard for. We have always made the quality of the parts that we make for our customers a priority. Many of the parts we are selected to make on mission critical with some having loss of life as an extra consideration. Ejection seats come to mind along with parachutes both of which we have made parts for. When we sign off on a part to be shipped it is correct or it does not go to the customer, no exceptions.
That practice is applied to every part we make regardless of its use because that is what the customer is paying for. The AS9100 standard applies to everything in the company including commercial parts. It is a system for running a company from the top down and touches every thing that happens in the certified company.
On July 8, 2013 Titan Spring Inc. was notified by the Boeing Company Space and Intelligence Systems Division that because of Titan’s high quality performance. Titan Spring, Inc. has been approved to participate in the S&IS Delegation Program.
Delegation will allow Titan to directly ship products procured by Space and Intelligence Systems without the requirement for source inspection when Q-clause Q925 is imposed on Purchase Contracts. As part of the approval process Titan Spring, Inc. has met the following criteria:
Maintain a Boeing approved Quality Management System.
Maintain a minimum Boeing Enterprise Supplier Tool (BEST) El Segundo California site Quality Rating of 99.55% Bronze or BEST site Alternate Rating of Bronze over a 12 month period of performance.
Have Have no major findings.
In addition to this delegation Titan also has maintained AS 9100 certification to the “C” revision and as of March 2018 has been approved for the “D” revision. Quality is not just a word or department at Titan it is a way for life. It touches every aspect of the company from company officers to the new hire it is what drives the company.
Titan has been certified to various revisions of the AS9100 standard since 2007 and has never had a major finding charged against it. The international standard recognized all over the world allows Titan to supply high quality custom made parts. The standard gives international customers confidence in Titans quality for mission critical products supplied to their customers. Titan ships to customers in, France, Germany, Israel, and Taiwan without them needing to survey its facility.
